Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)
Overview
Rhinoplasty (nose job) is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to improve its appearance, function, or both. Whether performed to refine facial harmony, correct the effects of injury, or improve breathing, rhinoplasty is carefully tailored to each patient's unique anatomy and goals.
The objective is to create a nose that looks natural, remains proportional to the rest of the face, and preserves or improves normal nasal function.

What Can Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) Treat?
Rhinoplasty can address both cosmetic and functional concerns, including:
- A prominent nasal hump
- A nose that is too large or too small
- A wide nasal bridge
- A bulbous or poorly defined nasal tip
- A drooping or upturned nasal tip
- A crooked nose
- Nasal asymmetry
- A nose that appears too long or too short
- Breathing difficulties caused by a deviated septum
- Nasal obstruction related to enlarged turbinates
Many patients choose rhinoplasty to improve both the appearance of their nose and the quality of their breathing in a single procedure.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you
- Are bothered by the size or shape of your nose
- Have breathing difficulties caused by structural nasal problems
- Have completed facial growth (typically around age 16 or older)
- Are in good overall health
- Do not smoke, or are willing to stop before surgery
- Have realistic expectations about the outcome
During your consultation, Dr. Danino will evaluate your facial proportions and discuss the surgical options best suited to your goals.
How the Procedure Is Performed
Every rhinoplasty is individualized according to the patient's anatomy and desired outcome.Small incisions are usually made inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty), leaving no visible external scars. In certain cases, a small incision may be placed across the columella—the strip of skin between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty)—to allow greater surgical precision.Through these incisions, the underlying bone and cartilage are carefully reshaped to create improved facial balance while preserving structural support and normal breathing.
Depending on the patient's needs, rhinoplasty may involve:
- Removing a dorsal hump
- Refining the nasal tip
- Narrowing the nasal bridge
- Straightening a crooked nose
- Correcting a deviated septum (septoplasty)
- Reducing enlarged turbinates to improve airflow
- Refining the nostrils
- Rebuilding nasal support using cartilage grafts when necessary
The procedure typically lasts 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery.
Anesthesia
Rhinoplasty is generally performed under:
- General anesthesia, or
- Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation ("twilight anesthesia")
The most appropriate option will be discussed during your consultation.

Recovery
Most patients return home the same day after surgery.
During the first week, it is common to experience:
- Swelling of the nose and face
- Bruising around the eyes
- Nasal congestion
- Mild discomfort
- Temporary difficulty breathing through the nose
If nasal packing is used, it is usually removed within 1 to 5 days. The external splint is generally removed after 5 to 8 days.
Most patients are able to return to work or school within 10 to 14 days, although mild swelling continues to improve over several weeks.
Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and contact sports should be avoided for approximately 6 weeks, while complete healing and refinement of the nose may continue for up to 12 months.
Results
Initial improvements become visible once the splint is removed and swelling begins to subside.
Although most swelling resolves within the first few weeks, the nose continues to refine over several months, with the final result becoming apparent after 6 to 12 months, particularly at the nasal tip.
A successful rhinoplasty creates:
- Improved facial harmony
- Better nasal proportions
- A refined yet natural appearance
- Improved breathing when functional corrections are performed
The goal is not to create a different face, but rather a nose that blends naturally with your unique facial features.
Combining Procedures
Rhinoplasty is frequently combined with other facial procedures to achieve comprehensive facial balance.
Common combinations include:
- Chin augmentation
- Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
- Face and neck lift
- Upper lip lift
- Facial fat grafting
- Botox®
- Dermal fillers such as Juvéderm®
Combining procedures can often provide more harmonious results while allowing a single recovery period.
Risks and Possible Complications
As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries certain risks. Fortunately, complications are uncommon when surgery is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon.
Potential complications include:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Persistent swelling
- Nasal obstruction
- Minor asymmetries
- Unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome
- Temporary numbness
- Scar tissue formation
- Need for revision rhinoplasty
During your consultation, Dr. Danino will discuss the potential risks, expected recovery, and realistic outcomes based on your individual anatomy.
