Overview

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase breast volume, improve shape, and enhance overall breast symmetry and proportion. It may be performed for cosmetic purposes or as part of breast reconstruction.

Breast augmentation can be achieved using breast implants or autologous fat transfer (lipofilling), depending on the patient's anatomy, available donor fat, and desired outcome.

Breast augmentation may be considered for patients who wish to address:

How the Procedure Is Performed

The surgical approach depends on whether augmentation is performed with implants, fat transfer, or a combination of techniques.

Breast Augmentation With Implants

Breast implants provide a predictable way to increase breast volume and modify breast shape.

The selection of an implant is highly individualized and may take into consideration:

  • Implant size and volume

  • Shape and profile

  • Implant filling material

  • Breast and chest dimensions

  • Existing breast tissue

  • Skin elasticity

  • Desired outcome

 

Rather than selecting an implant based solely on cup size, the objective is to choose an implant that complements the patient's anatomy and provides a proportionate, stable result.

The implant may be positioned above or below the chest muscle, or using a dual-plane technique, depending on the patient's anatomy and surgical plan.

Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer

Fat transfer, also known as lipofilling or fat grafting, offers an alternative to breast implants for selected patients.

During the procedure, fat is removed through liposuction from another area of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks. The harvested fat is carefully processed and then injected into the breasts to increase volume and refine their shape.

Fat transfer may be particularly suitable for patients seeking:

  • A moderate increase in breast volume

  • Natural-feeling augmentation using their own tissue

  • Correction of breast asymmetry

  • Refinement of breast shape

  • Reconstruction following previous breast surgery

 

Because some of the transferred fat is naturally absorbed by the body, more than one treatment session may occasionally be required to achieve the desired result.

Anesthesia

Breast augmentation is generally performed under general anesthesia.

The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, allowing most patients to return home the same day after an appropriate period of observation.

Recovery

Recovery varies depending on the surgical technique and whether additional procedures are performed.

During the first several days, it is common to experience:

  • Swelling

  • Bruising

  • Tightness or pressure in the chest

  • Mild to moderate discomfort

  • Temporary changes in breast or nipple sensation

A supportive surgical bra may be recommended during the healing period.

Many patients can gradually return to non-strenuous work and daily activities within approximately 1 to 2 weeks. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should generally be avoided for several weeks or until cleared by your surgeon.

The breasts gradually soften and settle into their final position over the following weeks and months.

Breast Implants and Long-Term Follow-Up

Breast implants are medical devices and require appropriate long-term clinical monitoring.

 

Breast implants do not have a predetermined expiration date, and they do not necessarily need to be replaced after a specific number of years. The decision to replace or remove an implant depends on the patient's symptoms, clinical examination, implant condition, and imaging when appropriate.

 

Regular follow-up allows your surgeon to monitor the breasts and implants over time and address any changes or concerns that may develop.

Risks and Possible Complications

As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries potential risks. These vary depending on whether implants, fat transfer, or combined techniques are used.

Potential complications may include:

  • Bleeding or hematoma

  • Infection

  • Changes in breast or nipple sensation

  • Breast asymmetry

  • Visible or abnormal scarring

  • Implant rupture or deflation

  • Implant displacement or malposition

  • Capsular contracture

  • Changes in breast appearance over time

  • Fat necrosis or oil cysts following fat transfer

  • Partial absorption of transferred fat

  • Need for additional or revision surgery
