Breast Reduction
Overview
Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and weight of overly large breasts while improving their shape and position. Beyond aesthetic improvement, breast reduction is often performed to relieve physical discomfort and improve quality of life.
By removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, the procedure creates lighter, more proportionate breasts that better complement the patient's body while maintaining a natural appearance.

What Can Breast Reduction Treat?
Breast reduction may be recommended for patients experiencing:
-
Chronic neck, shoulder, or back pain
-
Shoulder grooves caused by bra straps
-
Skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts
-
Difficulty exercising or participating in daily activities
-
Poor posture related to breast weight
-
Breast asymmetry
-
Difficulty finding properly fitting clothing
-
Emotional discomfort or self-consciousness related to breast size
For many patients, breast reduction provides both functional relief and aesthetic improvement.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if you:
-
Experience physical discomfort caused by large breasts
-
Feel your breasts are disproportionate to your body
-
Have limitations during exercise or daily activities
-
Have chronic skin irritation beneath the breasts
-
Are in good overall health
-
Do not smoke, or are willing to stop before surgery
-
Have realistic expectations about the outcome
During your consultation, Dr. Danino will assess your breast anatomy, skin quality, symptoms, and overall body proportions to determine the most appropriate surgical approach.
How the Procedure Is Performed
Breast reduction involves removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin while reshaping the remaining breast to create a lighter, firmer, and more proportionate appearance.
The nipple and areola are repositioned to a more youthful location while maintaining their natural appearance whenever possible.
The amount of tissue removed is carefully planned based on your anatomy, symptoms, and desired breast size. The goal is to relieve discomfort while preserving balanced, natural breast contours.
In patients with significant breast sagging, breast reduction naturally includes a breast lift (mastopexy) as part of the procedure.
The surgery typically lasts 2 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure.

Before
After
Anesthesia
Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia.
The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis, although some patients may require a short overnight stay depending on the extent of surgery and individual recovery.
Recovery
Following surgery, it is normal to experience:
-
Swelling
-
Bruising
-
Mild to moderate discomfort
-
Temporary changes in nipple sensation
-
Tightness in the chest
A supportive surgical bra is typically worn during the healing period to help minimize swelling and support the new breast shape.
Most patients return to desk work and light daily activities within 1 to 2 weeks. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should generally be avoided for approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
As swelling subsides over the following months, the breasts soften and settle into their final position.
Results
Breast reduction offers both functional and aesthetic benefits, including:
-

-
Improved posture
-
Easier participation in physical activities
-
Better fitting clothing
-
Improved breast symmetry
-
A lighter, firmer, more youthful breast shape
