Mommy Makeover
Overview
A mommy makeover is a personalized combination of cosmetic procedures designed to address changes to the breasts and body that may remain after pregnancy, breastfeeding, childbirth, or significant weight changes.
Pregnancy can stretch the abdominal skin and muscles, change breast volume and position, and alter fat distribution. Because these changes are different for every patient, a mommy makeover is not a single operation or a standardized group of procedures.
Depending on your anatomy and goals, a mommy makeover may combine abdominoplasty, breast lift, breast augmentation or reduction, and liposuction. Procedures may be performed during the same operation when appropriate or divided into separate stages when this is considered safer.

What Can a Mommy Makeover Address?
A mommy makeover may address several changes associated with pregnancy and weight fluctuations, including:
-
Loose or stretched abdominal skin
-
Separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
-
Persistent abdominal or flank fat
-
Loss of breast volume
-
Sagging or descended breasts
-
Changes in breast shape
-
Breast asymmetry
-
Disproportionately large breasts
-
Changes in overall body contour
Treatment is customized according to the changes present rather than automatically treating every area.
Procedures That May Be Included
Abdominoplasty
An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, removes excess abdominal skin and can repair separated abdominal muscles when necessary.
The remaining skin is repositioned to produce a smoother and firmer abdominal contour. Liposuction may also be performed to improve the transition between the abdomen, waist, and flanks.
Breast Lift
A breast lift (mastopexy) reshapes and elevates breasts that have descended following pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, or aging.
Excess skin is removed, the breast tissue is reshaped, and the nipple and areola are repositioned when necessary.
Breast Augmentation
When the breasts have lost volume, breast augmentation can restore or enhance breast fullness using implants or, in selected patients, fat transfer.
When both volume loss and significant sagging are present, augmentation may be combined with a breast lift.
Breast Reduction
For patients with large or heavy breasts, breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin while reshaping and lifting the breast.
Liposuction
Liposuction removes localized deposits of subcutaneous fat and may be used to improve contours around the abdomen, waist, flanks, hips, or other selected areas.
Liposuction does not significantly tighten loose skin, so patients with substantial abdominal skin laxity may require abdominoplasty instead.
Mommy Makeover Procedure
-
Consultation & Assessment: The breasts, abdomen, skin quality, abdominal muscles, fat distribution, previous scars, and overall body proportions are evaluated. Your medical history, previous pregnancies, current medications, weight stability, and aesthetic goals are also reviewed.
-
Surgical Planning: A personalized combination of procedures is selected. Not every procedure needs to be performed at the same time and more extensive surgery may be divided into stages.
-
Surgery: Generally performed under general anesthesia. Excess skin and fat are removed, abdominal muscle separation repaired, and the breasts reshaped or restored according to the surgical plan.
-
Postoperative Care: Dressings and compression garments may be used after surgery, and drains may occasionally be necessary. Patients receive instructions regarding wound care, medications, sleeping position, activity restrictions, and follow-up.
Recovery & Results
Recovery varies according to the procedures performed. Swelling, bruising, tightness, and discomfort are expected during early healing.
Light walking is encouraged, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are restricted. Patients with young children should arrange assistance because lifting children may not be permitted during the initial recovery period.
Initial improvements become visible as swelling decreases, while the final breast and body contours develop over several months.
Results can be long-lasting when weight remains stable, although normal aging, future pregnancies, and significant weight fluctuations can change the breasts and body over time.
Safety & Possible Complications
Because a mommy makeover may combine several operations, careful surgical planning and patient selection are particularly important.
Potential complications include:
-
Bleeding or hematoma
-
Infection
-
Seroma
-
Delayed wound healing
-
Unfavorable scarring
-
Changes in sensation
-
Breast or body asymmetry
-
Contour irregularities
-
Implant-related complications when implants are used
-
Blood clots
-
Anesthesia-related complications
-
Need for revision surgery
The risks depend on the procedures performed, the patient's health, and the duration and complexity of surgery. In some cases, performing the procedures in separate stages may reduce surgical risk.
