Nymphoplasty (Labiaplasty)

Overview

Nymphoplasty, also known as labiaplasty, is a surgical procedure that reduces and reshapes the labia minora (inner vaginal lips). Women seek this procedure for a variety of reasons, including physical discomfort, irritation during daily activities or exercise, and aesthetic concerns.

The goal of surgery is to create a more balanced, natural appearance while preserving normal sensation and function. Every procedure is carefully tailored to each patient's anatomy and personal goals.

What Can Nymphoplasty (Labiaplasty) Treat?

Labiaplasty may be recommended for women experiencing:

  • Enlarged or elongated labia minora (labial hypertrophy)

  • Discomfort during exercise, cycling, or other physical activities

  • Irritation or chafing caused by clothing

  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse

  • Difficulty wearing certain clothing or swimwear

  • Labial asymmetry

  • Self-consciousness related to the appearance of the labia

The procedure is designed to improve comfort while maintaining a natural appearance.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for nymphoplasty if you:

  • Experience physical discomfort related to enlarged labia

  • Feel self-conscious about the appearance of your labia

  • Have completed pubertal development

  • Are in good overall health

  • Do not smoke, or are willing to stop before surgery

  • Have realistic expectations regarding the outcome

A private consultation allows Dr. Danino to understand your concerns and recommend the most appropriate surgical approach.

Surgical Techniques

Several surgical techniques can be used depending on each patient's anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Linear (Trim) Technique

The trim technique removes excess tissue along the free edge of the labia minora.

This technique:

  • Reduces excess length

  • Creates a smooth, symmetrical contour

  • Is particularly effective when excess tissue extends along the entire edge

Wedge (Triangular) Technique

The wedge technique removes a V-shaped section of tissue from the central portion of the labia.

This approach:

  • Preserves the natural free edge of the labia

  • Maintains natural pigmentation and contour

  • Produces a discreet central scar

The most appropriate technique is determined during consultation based on your anatomy and desired outcome.

Anesthesia

Nymphoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and patient preference.

Most patients return home the same day.

Recovery

Recovery is generally well tolerated.

Patients can expect:

  • Mild swelling and bruising

  • Temporary tenderness

  • Gradual improvement over several weeks

Most women return to non-physical work within a few days to one week.

Patients should avoid:

  • Sexual intercourse for approximately 6 weeks

  • Intense exercise for 4–6 weeks

  • Activities that place pressure on the surgical area during early healing

Careful hygiene and postoperative instructions help ensure optimal healing.

Results

  • Improved comfort during sports and daily activities

  • Easier clothing fit

  • Improved symmetry

  • Increased confidence

  • Natural-looking results

Final results become apparent as swelling gradually resolves over the following weeks and months.

Risks and Possible Complications

Although complications are uncommon, every surgical procedure carries potential risks, including:

  • Bleeding

  • Infection

  • Delayed wound healing

  • Temporary swelling

  • Scar sensitivity

  • Minor asymmetry

  • Need for revision surgery (rare)

During your consultation, Dr. Danino will discuss the benefits and potential risks in detail.
